Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD)
Many Americans experience chronic facial and neck pain, along with frequent headaches, which may be caused by Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD). The temporomandibular joints (TMJ) connect the lower jawbone to the skull and are constantly in use during activities like speaking, chewing, swallowing, and yawning. Pain in this area can be uncomfortable and limit movement.

Symptoms of TMD include:
- Jaw pain.
- Symptoms of ear discomfort may include pain, ringing, or a feeling of stuffiness in the ears.
- Regularly experiencing headaches or neck pain
- There may be a clicking or popping sound when the jaw moves.
- There is swelling on the sides of the face.
- There are muscle spasms in the jaw region.
- The alignment of the top and bottom teeth has changed.
- Locked jaw or limited opening of the mouth

If you experience any of these symptoms, be sure to inform your doctor. Your dentist can identify TMD and develop a personalized treatment plan for you. Additionally, there are some easy measures you can take at home or work to avoid TMD from worsening or developing.
Remember to relax your face by keeping your lips together and teeth apart.
Do not grind your teeth.
Stop chewing gum all the time.
Avoid placing the phone receiver between your head and shoulder; instead, use a headset or hold the receiver in your hand.
Make sure to chew your food thoroughly on both sides of your mouth.
Avoid resting your chin on your hand while sitting.
