What causes gum disease?

Certain factors can increase a patient's risk of developing periodontal disease, including:

  • Smoking or using chewing tobacco
  • Diabetes
  • Certain medications such as steroids, anti-epileptic drugs, cancer therapy drugs, calcium channel blockers, and oral contraceptives.
  • Bridges that no longer fit properly
  • Crooked teeth
  • Old fillings
  • Pregnancy

    While it is possible to have periodontal disease and not know it, some symptoms can include:

    • Gums that bleed easily
    • Red, swollen, and sensitive gums.
    • Receding gums can cause teeth to appear longer.
    • Persistent bad breath or unpleasant taste
    • You have pus trapped between your teeth and gums.
    • Your adult teeth are loose or separating.
    • If you observe any changes in the alignment of your teeth when you bite.
