Cavity Fillings and Dental Sealants

Whether you need to repair a cavity or protect against one, our fillings and sealants offer strong, lasting results. Cavity fillings restore teeth damaged by decay using durable, tooth-colored materials for a natural look. Dental sealants act as a barrier, shielding your back teeth from bacteria and plaque. Both treatments are fast and effective, helping to keep your smile healthy for years to come.

Dental Filling Process

Dental Exam and Diagnosis: We begin with a gentle exam and digital X-rays to locate and confirm any tooth decay. If a cavity is present, we’ll recommend a filling to restore the tooth.

Numbing the Area: To ensure your comfort, we numb the area around the tooth with local anesthesia. We also offer sedation options if you’re feeling anxious.

Removing the Decay: Using precise instruments, we carefully remove the decayed portion of the tooth, cleaning and preparing the space for the filling material.

Placing the Filling We apply a tooth-colored composite resin in layers, curing it with a special light to harden and bond it to your tooth.

Shaping and Polishing: After the filling is placed, we shape and polish it to match your bite, restoring a natural look and smooth feel.

Post-Treatment Guidance: You’ll leave with a fully restored tooth and instructions for care. Most patients can eat and drink normally once numbness wears off.

Dental Sealant Process

Dental Evaluation: During your checkup, we examine your molars and premolars to determine if sealants are recommended—typically for children or adults with a history of cavities.

Cleaning the Tooth Surface: Before applying the sealant, we gently clean and dry the tooth to remove any plaque or food particles from the grooves and pits.

Preparing the Tooth: A mild etching solution is applied to the chewing surface for a few seconds. This roughens the enamel slightly, allowing the sealant to bond securely.

Applying the Sealant: We paint a thin layer of liquid sealant onto the tooth. The material flows into the deep grooves where cavities often start.

Curing with Light: A special curing light is used to harden the sealant in seconds, forming a strong, protective shield over the tooth surface.

Final Check: We ensure the sealant is smooth and properly bonded.

FAQ

  • How do I know if I need a dental filling?

Tooth pain, sensitivity, or visible damage could mean a cavity. We’ll confirm with a quick exam and digital X-rays.

  • What is the difference between a filling and a sealant?

Fillings repair teeth after decay has occurred. Sealants are a preventive coating that protects healthy teeth from future cavities.

  • How long do dental sealants typically protect teeth?

Sealants can last up to 10 years with proper care and regular dental checkups. They may be reapplied if worn or damaged.
